I struggled with vocabulary, and over time it affected my confidence. When I asked my professor for help, she encouraged me to find something about the language that genuinely interested me—whether movies, articles, or anything that made learning feel less like a chore. So I started watching Mad Men with English subtitles. Every time I came across a word I didn’t know, I wrote it down, looked it up, and used it in a sentence. Slowly but surely, my vocabulary grew. I also joined social activities with exchange students, which pushed me to use English in real-life situations. Today, I’ve been living abroad for 7 years, working in international environments where English is my daily language. The lesson?
